This is a typical Pre WWI-WWI era war shooting badge. The National Guard badges were differentfrom the Regular Army. The NationalGuard had Brass, bronze or copper colored marksmanship badges.
Why did we go with a pin back and not pin and catch? So these cannot be mixed up and mistaken for original items. So they can be attached and removed from uniforms without making any large holes and are easy to adjust.
