United States Marine (1925–1979) who was immortalized in Joe Rosenthal\'s famous World War II photograph as one of the six flag-raisers atop Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima.
Rene Gagnon World War II autograph letter signed three times as a Private First Class in Company E, 2nd Battalion, 28th Marine Regiment. From an undisclosed location in the \'\'Central Pacific\'\', Gagnon writes to his future wife Pauline Harnois. Dated 7 December 1944, love letter reads in part: \'\'...I just came back from the movies, Up In Mables Room was playing, it sure was a good comedy...I\'m sending you a couple pictures for your album...its only 15 minutes before taps and I\'ve got to answer a letter to my cousin...Rene\'\'. Accompanied by the censor-stamped mailing envelope made out in Gagnon\'s hand in ink, including his name and return address (offering another signature). Two page letter on two sheets of ruled stationery measures 8\'\' x 10\'\'. In addition to signing the closure of his letter, Gagnon writes \'\'R.A. Gagnon\'\' at the bottom edge of both sheets.
