1938 Kraft-Phenix Cheese Corporation Building Souvenir Paperweight by A.C.Rehberger Co. w/History of Both Chicago Mfg\'ing Mainstays

Superb Art Deco Paperweight in the Streamline Moderne Architectural Style! The 1938 Kraft-Phenix Cheese CorporationBuilding Paperweight commemorating the new Kraft International Headquarters,designed by the famous Chicago architects Mundie, Jensen, Bourke andHavens, located at 500 Peshtigo Court in Chicago. Paperweight was designed and manufactured byA.C. Rehberger Co. – another historical manufacturer of 20th centuryChicago (see more below). It is made ofheavy cast lead alloy retains much of its original silver-plated finish.

A.C. RehbergerCompany (later known as A.C.R. Limited) began foundry operations in Chicago in1912. They were one of only two firms inthe U.S. which specialized in hand-molded, handcrafted metal sculpturalfigurines in the early part of the 20th Century. Cast in lead or zinc and plated in silver,brass or copper, the myriad of items produced varied. Over 3000 different items were producedthrough the 1920’s - paperweights, bookends, desk sets, lamps, ashtrays,nameplates, sports trophies and collectors\' items were all created by Rehberger- including the first Oscar statuette in the 1920s! During the 1930’s, Rehberger had anotherseries of successes, beginning with producing hundreds of cast metal souvenirsfor the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair. Atthe same time, the firm was gaining popularity for its cast metal coin banksand miniature buildings produced as giveaway promotions for banks &financial institutions, major manufacturer’s headquarters, and municipalbuildings . But perhaps their mostfamous & most highly desired items – even coveted to this day, were themaking their famous replica Airplane Series of Lamps, Display Models, Clocks,& Ashtrays for desktops across America; like the Boeing 247, the DouglasDC-3, and the Boeing B-314 Clipper, to name a few. But, I digress…..

The Unique &One-of-a-Kind Art Deco Streamline Moderne Kraft-PhenixBuilding later housed the Chicago Police Department & other governmentagencies through the 1990’s. It wasrazed in 2003 – due to a complete lack of foresight & vision by ineptChicago City Leaders at the time, IMHO, as the building deserved to be on theNational Register of Historic Places (see pic)!

The paperweightsouvenir measures 3-1/4” across by 2-13/16” deep by 3-1/8” high and weighs1-1/2 pounds. It retains most of itsoriginal silver-plate finish, that has considerably tarnished, and the originalfelt bottom covering. Overall Condition,commensurate with its age of 80+ years and use over that time, is Very Good.
