This rare photo depicts the crew of the USS Trenton (CL-11) on Culebra Island in Puerto Rico. The person in the middle is likely Captain Nelson Goss, one of the well-known leaders of the USS Trenton.

Approximate size: 5.5 inches x 3.2 inches

DATE OF BIRTH: April 22, 1882

HOME OF RECORD: Rockville, Indiana

Nelson H. Goss graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Class of 1905. He retired as a U.S. Navy Captain.

He was awarded for for distinguished service in the line of his profession as Commanding Officer of the USS O\'BRIEN and the USS WADSWORTH, engaged in the important exacting and hazardous duty of patrolling the waters infested with enemy submarines and mines, in escorting and protecting vitally important convoys of troops and supplies through these waters, and in offensive and defensive action, vigorously and unremittingly prosecuted against all forms of enemy naval activity during World War I.

USS Trenton (CL-11) was an Omaha-class light cruiser, originally classified as a scout cruiser, of the United States Navy. She was the second Navy ship named for the city of Trenton, New Jersey. She spent most of her pre-war career moving between the Atlantic and the Pacific.

Trenton joined the Special Service Squadron in 1934, for a good-will tour of Latin America. In May 1939, she would join Squadron 40-T in protecting American interests during the Spanish Civil War and not return to the US until July 1940, when she carried the royal family of Luxembourg, fleeing from the Nazi occupation of their country.
