Approximate size: 2.5 inches x 3.9 inches

Jonas Richard Leake (1844-1878) was born in Surrey and was the son of an Irish physician. After his training as a surgeon, he obtained his license to practice in 1864 after graduating the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Edinburgh, Scotland. He then joined the British Army’s 80th Regiment of Foot as an assistant surgeon in 1867. On May 16, 1868, he exchanged positions with Staff Assistant Surgeon James Inkson.

From 1869 to 1874, he served in Bengal. In addition to his medical practice, Leake authored a medical manuscript titled “Materia Medica” in July 1866. This manuscript, signed by Leake himself, contains 290 numbered pages and is a significant contribution to the field of medicine during his time. Currently, the asking price for \"Materia Medica\" is $3,750.00 online, to give you an idea of the value of items associated with Leake.

The 80th Regiment of Foot (Staffordshire Volunteers) was an infantry regiment of the British Army, raised in 1793. Under the Childers Reforms it eventually amalgamated with the 38th (1st Staffordshire) Regiment of Foot to form the South Staffordshire Regiment in 1881.

The regiment was raised by Henry, Lord Paget as the 80th Regiment of Foot, in response to the threat posed by the French Revolution, on 9 December 1793. The regiment was largely recruited from the Staffordshire Militia and comprised men living on the estates of Paget\'s father, The Earl of Uxbridge.

After returning to Sydney in 1844, the regiment sailed for India. Part of the regiment again suffered shipwreck when the sailing ship Briton ran aground on the Andaman Islands in November 1844. The regiment arrived in India just as the conflict in the Punjab later known as the First Anglo-Sikh War broke out. They fought at the Battles of Mudki and Ferozeshah in December 1845 and the Battle of Sobraon in February 1846. Ferozeshah became celebrated as a regimental anniversary on 21 December thereafter, and is still marked by the successor 3rd Battalion Mercian Regiment.

Stationed in Lahore from 1846 until 1852, in that year it fought in the Second Anglo-Burmese War which saw the East India company annex the province of Pegu. Returning to India in 1853, the 80th sailed back to the United Kingdom in the following year, where they were brought up to full strength by recruiting parties. In 1856 they moved to the Cape Colony. The Indian Rebellion of 1857 broke out in May and the 80th arrived in Calcutta in February 1858. Broken into small parties, some mounted on camels, they took part in the Central India Campaign. Although the war ended in June 1858 the 80th Foot remained for nearly nine years, arriving back in England in 1867.

In 1872 the regiment was sent to Singapore, shortly thereafter moving to Hong Kong. Three companies took part in the Perak War in Malaysia in 1875.

Jonas Richard Leake\'s son is also a man with military honors.Jonas William Leake entered the R.A.M.C. in 1899, became Major in 1910, and Lieutenant-Colonel in 1914. He served during the South African War 1899-1902, present at relief of Ladysmith (Queen’s medal with six clasps, King’s medal with two clasps), and during the European War 1914-1916. In 1899, Jonas William married Mabel Mary, daughter of William Morgan.

The first reference photo is a snippet from a book listing the British Army list at the time, printed by the London War Office in c1871. This is regarding very early in Leake\'s career, which is a neat bit of history.

The second reference photo is a snippet from a book (page 326) calledHart\'s Annual Army List, Militia List, and Imperial Yeomanry List, otherwise known as The New Annual Army List, Militia List, and Indian Civil Service List, printed in 1872 by Colonel H.G. Hart (H.P. Depot Battalion). It detailsBritish Army’s 80th Regiment of Foot, Staffordshire Volunteers, that Leake was a part of.

The third reference photo is a snippet from a book called Guy\'s Hospital Reports, printed by J.E. Adlard Bartholomew Close in 1865.

The fourth reference photo is of information concerning Jonas Richard Leake\'s son, Jonas William Leake. This snippet was printed in the bookDebrett\'s Baronetage, Knightage, and Companionage, printed in 1921.

The fifth, sixth, and seventh reference photos are of his medical book mentioned earlier, the\"Materia Medica\". I find it interesting you can see in bold letters in the fifth reference photo \"Chloroform.\"

Nothing in the reference photos is included in this purchase. The only thing for sale in this listing is the CDV photo itself. The reference photos are to give you reference and background information.
