The relief designs celebrate scenes of “domestic employment” such as childcare and were adapted by Josiah Wedgwood from the designs of Lady Templetown. An amateur artist, Lady Templetown supplied Wedgwood with ‘cut Indian paper’ designs between 1783 and 1789. These were in the sentimental manner popular in the last quarter of the 18th century and they were translated to bas-relief models by William Hackwood. Josiah Wedgwood wrote to her in June 1783 to express his pleasure at hearing that his first bas-relief copies of her work had met with her approval, and, somewhat obsequiously, soliciting more. Like all Wedgwood Jasper wares, these beautiful objects began as an exceptionally fine, smooth-bodied clay found in central England. The Etruria Works was a ceramics factory opened by Josiah Wedgwood in 1769 in a district of Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England, which he named Etruria. The factory ran for 180 years.
