TOPAZ is a mineral, an island silicate of aluminum with fluorine.
PROPERTIES Composition (formula): Al2SiO4F2 Color: Colorless, pure water topaz is rare. Most of the time the mineral topaz has light shades of yellow, wine yellow, straw yellow, blue, violet, green, pink; rarely red. With prolonged exposure to sunlight, the color of topaz pales. There are topazes with polychrome coloring. DIAGNOSTIC FEATURES Topaz differs from similar minerals by its high hardness. In dense granular masses, topaz is similar to quartz, from which it differs by the presence of cleavage and greater hardness.
MORPHOLOGY The mineral topaz forms crystals of predominantly prismatic shape. Less often topaz occurs as hexagonal aggregates and granular masses. Well-formed large topaz crystals grow exclusively in cavities.
ORIGIN Topaz is formed - in veins and cavities in granites, granitic pegmatites, rhyolites, and greisen as a result of processes associated with the degassing of these igneous rocks, with the participation of volatile-rich, high-temperature hydrothermal solutions; - in high degrees of metamorphism of alumina fluoride-bearing sediments rich in quartz; - in placers in the weathering of rocks containing topaz, because the mineral topaz has high hardness and chemical stability.
APPLICATION Gem-quality topaz stone is used for jewelry. In geology, the mineral topaz is a reference mineral in the scale of hardness of minerals (Mohs scale).
HEALING PROPERTIES The topaz stone is said to strengthen the immune system, protects against colds, accelerates tissue regeneration, treats digestive organs, liver, thyroid, gallbladder and spleen.
