Rare Social History 1968 New England Telephone Union Worker Labor Strike Posters:
$575.00

These vintage New England Tel Labor Strike posters from 1968 are a rare find for collectors of historical memorabilia. Produced by the International Brotherhood of Telephone Workers, it depicts the solidarity of the trade union during a time of labor unrest. The poster, Union made in the United States, features bold graphics that are still vibrant after all these years. It is a great addition to any collection of fraternal organization memorabilia.

One sign was obviously used heavily throughout the strike with its original hanging string still attached. Another shows much less use if any. Verso of the heavily used one reads “We are fighting the 2 billion dollar giant”. Verso of the unused or slight used one reads “Start 3pm Apr 26, 1968, Still out Thurs June 13, 1968. In fact this labor strike would go on for 129 days until September 2nd of that same year!

A very rare piece of telephone history, labor history and social history alike with no known examples of these picket posters circulating on the market or in a museum online database. In fact the only image we could find of this poster was on the telephone-museum website which had a brief blurb about the labor strike and a picture of a union worker on strike wearing the sign (see photos 19 and 20 for reference purposes only)

In our research we were able to find that the University of Massachusetts in Amherst has a small archive on a similar labor strike that occurred in 1989 however no mention of this one 21 years earlier.

The poster reflects the values of the trade union and the power of collective action. It is a testament to the struggles and victories of the labor movement. One poster is heavily used and worn but acts as a testament to the authenticity of the events occurrence. The second poster has been carefully preserved and is in excellent condition for its age, with no tears and only some gentle scattered foxing/spotting. It would make a great gift for a history buff or anyone interested in social justice.

Each poster is screen printed on rigid paper board and measures 22” x 14”
