Very Rare, Early Antique Civil War Period OUTDOOR 1863 Carte de Visite Photo of Famous ARCH ST. THEATRE Building in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania DESCRIPTION: Particularly nice, original rare early antique outdoor 1863 Carte de Visite photo from my collection of early antique building photos. Early outside shots are always nice and this one is particularly nice AND PARTICULARLY RARE.3 boys are standing by one of the gas lights and some furniture is piled to the right. This photo is an early theatre building squeezed downtown between others, SPECIFICALLY THE ARCH STREET THEATRE OF PHILADELPHIA. IT WAS THE FIRST AND MOST FAMOUS OF THE VERY FAMOUS ARCH STREET THEATRE BUILDINGS, designed by the very famous William Haviland in the Federal Style. The Federal Style was influenced by both contemporary English and French design. The largest influence is English architectecture of the late 1700's and early 1800's. The ancient architectural influence for these architects working in the Federal style was Roman architecture, not Greek. The classical design used in this building was called Doric, where the columns sit directly on the deck of the building or the ground, while Roman Doric columns sit on bases. The Doric columns in the building's facade sit on circular bases and so are Roman. This first Arch St. theatre shown opened in 1828 and the building survived until 1863, when it was demolished for a newer and much grander Victorian Style building. Since it was a landmark of interest only while it was standing, THIS PHOTO THEREFORE DATES DURING THE CIVIL WAR, PRIOR TO ITS 1863 DEMOLITION. Photographer is identified on the reverse as "McALLISTER & BROTHER (not brothers!!), Opticians, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, card photographs, albums, Field Glasses for Army & Navy Use, Microscopes.....". Image style & content confirm that this CdeV appears to be from the Civil War period. Carte de Visite photos were popular, both by military men and civilians. Carte de Visites were the most popular photo format during the war years, and including military and political leaders and other subjects in your CdV album was very popular. This was the best way to collect and display and honor them, not having the various other methods we have today. OUTSIDE PHOTOS WERE ALWAYS THE MOST DIFFICULT & RAREST FOUND TODAY. THIS WAS CLEARLY A NICE SHOT OF AN EARLY PENNSYLVANIA THEATRE & Business. This one is very clear, in excellent condition. Standard CdV measurements.
