This rare smoke gray to purple hue CD 187 was produced by California Glass Insulator Company from 1912-1914. In 1914, CGIC reorganized to be more efficient and no longer produced smoke grey or purple insulators. This color coincides with the cut-off of manganese shipments from Germany at the start of World War I. Manganese was important in the early 1900's glass manufacturing to decolorize glass. However, when exposed to the ultraviolet rays of the sun, manganese treated glass would turn purple, hence the hue. This dating is also verifiable because the CGIC factory was flooded and they never produced this style again. The piece is in fair condition with a single large chunk missing, a small chip and scratches and scuffing on the bottom and top. The threaded interior is in great condition. The font is in large embossed letters. There are some air bubbles and mold marks. The piece is as is in the pictures. This is a unique and rare insulator for any collection.
