He eventually moved to Cleveland where he painted murals and portraits. His most famous work is The Spirit of '76, which depicts three Revolutionary War soldiers marching with their flags and has become an iconic image of patriotism in the United States and has been reproduced on posters, prints, coins, stamps and even the cover of a Bob Dylan album. Willard's other works include sculptures such as The Indian Hunter's Return (1890) and paintings such as A Country Home (1886).
