Splendid broadside advertising the Coon! Coon! Coon! Grand Ball for the North Auburn Fur Club held at the East Auburn Grange held March 6, 1902.
In the late 1880s thru the 1950s Grange Halls were social centers for many rural communities.
Coon , Coon, Coon was a popular song released in 1900 written by Gene Jefferson and the music by Leo Friedman .
A “coon song”, was a ragtime melody mixing jazz and march music and replete with degrading racial stereotypes.
This broadside suggests that this particular Ball was perhaps themed from this popular song and it would have required costumes or perhaps may have included vaudeville entertainment in addition to the formal dances. I am only speculating and do not know with any certainty. Regardless, it is a remarkable piece of history bringing one back to a time when communities were centered around the Grange Hall or other fraternal organizations.
Printed with hand-set type, printed letterpress, excellent bold ink imprint and original paper color.
Approximately 12” x 18.5”

The paper is extremely thin and has wear consistent with age and use. Fold lines, creases, tears and areas of paper loss along with old age toning and light soiling. Good condition overall considering age.
