1897 Antique 12" Gurley Y Level for Surveyor / Architect / Builder / Engineer.

Hello up for sale is a very rare Gurley Level that was owned by my grandfathers grandfather (GGGF). My great great grandfather (GGGF) did most of his work after the Civil War and retired around 1905. He did his work around the Memphis TN area (Tennessee, Arkansas & Mississippi).

He purchased this level in 1897 directly from the Gurley company and paid over $60.00 for it. In todays value (money) thats over $2,000.

According to my grandfather he was told just as important to the instrument was the strap. So he oiled it and so did the family in future generations. If you had to make a mad escape from a wild animal or other circumstance you needed a strong strap in good shape. Most of these for sale do not have the original strap in working order or has been replaced.

This comes with the original a plum bob that was never used as my GGGF had his own set he liked to use. 2 other smaller original plum bobs are also included.

Included is a sun shade for the lens that was standard in the purchase.

Of special note is the buckle which was made by the Anson Mills Company. The makers mark is seen on the back of the buckle with a M (Made in “USA” also). Anson Mills supplied the US military with ammo/side arm belts at that time and into WW1 +. Mills also did some surveying work after the Civil War in El Paso, TX.

It is my understanding that my GGGF never let this leave his side and slept next to it and would bring to social engagements due to the cost. This was also a great marketing tool at social engagements (Church etc.)

It is my desire this goto someone who can enjoy the beauty and history of this unique level that paved American history in the South.
