Medium size tamper listing. The original cutlery repurposed for this tamper was already a hundred years old when I was born...a big responsibility when I decided to cut it up. But to my thinking, this treasure is better suited to daily use by an enthusiastic smoker, than to be forgotten in a box or the back of drawer. Made in the late 1860s and nearly identical to the flatware gifted to President Grant in 1869, this smoking tool it the physical expression of history...it's ownership not to be taken lightly. This tamper has a rich past, no doubt...but we can't really ever know what it's been through. As it's new owner, it's up to you to imagine the scenes this piece has witnessed in its 150 odd years of life. American history, told in steel, bone and pewter. Literally gives me chills.
