Hello and thanks for looking, up for sale is a vintage 14K Yellow Gold & Diamond "CHEF DE GARE" enamel pin. This estate find stood out due to the 14K gold but it would be a shame to sell this as scrap gold so we are listing it in the hopes it finds a collector. The back of the the pin is hallmarked 14K and it alone, weighs 3 grams. Please view the photos and read the details below as they are a major part of the overall description. The pin was presented to the recipient as a high honor to the Society of 40 Men & 8 Horses. The organization (also known as "La Société") traces its roots to 1920 when members of the American Legion founded it as an honor society for members who were veterans of WWI. The title "40 & 8" comes from the box cars that were used to transport troops to the front in France. Each car had the emblem 40/8 stenciled on the sides, which meant that it could carry 40 men or 8 horses. These railroad cars were known as forty-and-eights. This pin is approximately 5/8" wide by 3/4" long and remains in very good condition. It has a triangular shape and the top has the words, "Chef De Gare" (Station Master) in a white enamel with gold lettering. The middle has a single cut diamond and underneath is a blue enamel with the numbers "40 Over 8". The back has a screw post and is secured with a hallmarked 'Sterling' round nut.
