Montana authors Bill and Jan Taylor brought out this 2008sequel to their first book on southwest Montana’s gold, silver, and copperindustry: the mines, smelters, concentrators, camps and the railroads thatserved them. (Volume I was published in 1999 and has been out-of-print foryears). Volume II covers such lines as the Northern Pacific & Montana; theRocky Fork & Cooke City; Butte Short Line; Red Bluff & Pony; theElkhorn Extension to the Helena, Boulder Valley & Butte; the Gaylord &Ruby Valley; and the 128-mile Northern Pacific & Montana line from De Smet,MT to Wallace, ID. All of these lines came about between 1888 and 1898. Whenthe Northern Pacific completed their main line through the area in 1883, theybypassed the mining district and refused to build branches to tap into theseriches. But James J. Hill, who was looking to invest in mining, resorts, andother interests that made money, linked with local men like Paris Gibson,Marcus Daly, and Charles Broadwater to construct the Montana Central while heextended his St. Paul, Minneapolis & Manitoba Railway west, the progenitorof the Great Northern empire. Meanwhile the Union Pacific through subsidiaryOregon River & Navigation was penetrating the silver districts of the Couerd’Alenes of northern Idaho. That initiated a war with the Northern Pacific andits ally and Helena banker Samuel Hauser that resulted in the branches andshort lines covered in this book. This is a 156-page softcover book. Glosspaper. New shrinkwrapped copy.
