In the late 1800s, the island known as Martha’s Vineyardbecame well-known as a vacation spot for the summer, establishing numerousresort hotels and boarding houses to go along with individual cottages. Theroads were dirt or sand so in 1873 a horse-drawn streetcar line was built fromthe steamboat piers at Oak Bluffs to the village. A 3-foot narrow-gauge steamrailroad was constructed in 1874 from Oak Bluffs some 9 miles across theisland. Although the railroad failed in 1895, the streetcar was eventuallyelectrified and continued providing service until 1918. Thanks to a widevariety of photos, postcards, and stereoviews, author Herman Page presents this72 page softcover. Saddle stitched. Gloss paper. New shrinkwrapped copy.
