Information about the large Concrete Structure in the far background. built by the Nestle’s Food Company prior to World War 1. During the war the plant converted to making condensed milk for the war effort. Bulk milk was imported from Maitland and Brockville, Ontario, Canada by ferry boat as well as from local farmers. The plant was a major employer with 150 employees.
In 1930 the plant was sold to the Dairyman’s League milk cooperative and operated as a milk plant until around 1937 when it was sold to the Long Valley Ore Company when it was converted to the manufacture of graphite and operated until 1942. Purchased by Raymond Wright in the mid 1950’s and used as boat storage and part of his marina business. The building was demolished in the early 2000’s due to being dangerously deteriorated.
The smaller building just before it was a sawmill that had operated in one form or another since approximately 1870 and imported large quantities of logs from Canadian forests.
