A little history................Bornon the Sandy Lake Indian Reserve, Ontario,Kakegamicis a self-taught native wildlife artist working with limited edition lithographs. He worked as a trapper (1961-65). He started drawing at an early age and found in nature one of his major inspirations, which is clearly seen in his works of art. Hisartwork is characterized by scenes from the life outdoors and nature. He began with realistic scenes and then evolved into more abstract work. He belonged to the “Woodland School of Art”.The influence of the Woodland School of Art is also evident. Traditional cultural values and old legends are painted by Robert in vivid and bright colors, and are a part of the new way of presenting and expressing their First Nations identity.Kakegamic comes from an artistic family and his work continues the Woodland Aboriginal tradition started by Norval Morrisseau, his cousin the late Carl Ray, and brothers Joachim and Goyce Kakegamic. His depiction of wildlife inhabiting his area of the universe is vividly monochromatic and his signature huge yellow eyes readily identify his work.
