In 1960, Richard Nixon launched his first campaign for President of the United States, officially announcing on January 9, 1960.He faced little opposition in the Republican primariesand chose former Massachusetts SenatorHenry Cabot Lodge Jr.as his running mate.His Democratic opponent wasJohn F. Kennedyand the race remained close for the duration.Nixon campaigned on his experience, but Kennedy called for new blood and claimed theEisenhower–Nixon administrationhadallowed the Soviet Union to overtake the U.S. in quantity and quality of ballistic missiles.While Kennedy faced issues about his Catholicism, Nixon remained a divisive figure to some. Of couse, Nixon lost this election to Kennedy.
This letter penned during his Presidential campaign is boldly typed and dated October 22, 1960 on White House stationary while in his role as Vice President of the United States. The letter measures 8" x 10 1/2" and is clean and crisp. The envelope measuring 4" x 9" from the Office of the VP has some slight discoloration and light edge fraying butis otherwise in excellent condition. The envelope is postmarked October 27, 1960.
