Nixon famously invokes, "I have never been a quitter...But as President Imust put the interest of America first...Therefore, I shall resign the Presidency effective at noon tomorrow. Vice President Ford will be sworn in as President at that hour in this office."
President Nixon made the address to the American public from the Oval Office on August 8, 1974 to announce his resignation from the Presidency due to the ongoing Watergate scandal. The following morning, August 9, Nixon submitted a signedletter of resignation to Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, becoming the only U.S. President to resign from office.
