I\'m pleased to offer this specimen of Rhodochrosite with Quartz, Sphalerite and perhaps a Hubnerite crystal fragment from the Sweet Home mine, Alma, Park County, Colorado. The specimen measures 1.79 x 1.43 x .86 inches or 4.55 x 3.64 x 2.19cm and is in good condition. The backside is sawn.
This is from the Stanley Evans collection of Tucson, Arizona and is offered here to help raise funds for the Pinal Geology and Mineral Museum in Coolidge, Arizona and the mineralogy lab at the University of Arizona. Mr. Evans is a retired mineral researcher at the UA and was kind enough to donate boxes of books and several flats of minerals (through mutual friend Ron Gibbs) to the PGMM. I will help sell the specimens so that all sales will directly benefit both the UA and the PGMM.
This is accompanied by a label from longtime and noted dealer Western Minerals of Tucson, Arizona. The Schlepp\'s have been a fixture at major shows for many, many years.
The piece shows several rhodochrosite on needle quartz with a single and partial hubnerite crystal blade and massive to crystalline sphalerite that fluoresces a bright orange color under both longwave and shortwave UV light--the best response under my lamp is under longwave. There appears to be a bit of orange-red fluorescing calcite in the matrix--this is best seen under the lamp.
Of course, the Sweet Home mine is famous for its exceptional and world class rhodochrosite specimens. Prices on all rhodos from the Sweet Home mine have increased over the years and I find myself unable to get specimens except in my collection purchases so I was happy to find this piece in the Evans donation.
