You are purchasing a BRAND NEW Reproduction gold plated BRASS No.5 Victor Victrola Orthophonic Reproducer~Soundbox. The diaphragm is an original 1925/26 duralumin part in perfect condition. This is something we make in our shop on a limited basis. It is suitable for all Orthophonic floor model Victrolas including the Credenza and will work with most Orthophonic portables and table top Victrolas. All of the work that was performed on this reproducer was done by me, Walt Sommers, and my son, Isaiah Sommers, owners of Gettysburg Antique Phonographs.Because of its gold finish this No.5 Orthophonic reproducer is especially suited for machines like the Credenza, VV 8-1, 8-30, 2-55, 2-56, HMV 1, and many other Victor and HMV Orthophonic machines that have gold fixtures. But it will work perfectly with most any Orthophonic class machine that uses a nickel or bronze finish. Contact me if you need help determining if this will work with your particular machine.
This reproducer is made using many original Victor Orthophonic components including the needle arm, diaphragm, spider, thumbscrew, needle arm limit screw. Other parts such as the diaphragm gaskets, ball bearings, tone arm mounting isolator and rubber bearing dampers are brand new parts. My gold plating bath is superior to the original Victor plating process - guaranteed.All of the bearings used in the needle fulcrum/pivot assembly are new parts. These bearings, once installed, are held next to the needle bar pivot by a weak, but effective, magnetic charge. One of the not so obvious but critical points of service involves cleaning and polishing the bearing races and the pivot (fulcrum) pin itself. Removing the needle bar fulcrum safely (and installing it again) requires a special press. We do not use hammers or other hazardous methods. This is an invaluable service that is usually neglected by most folks who claim to be restorers.
The original duralumin diaphragm is a real sweetheart in great condition with no damage or kinks. Fact: \"duralumin\" is really just a fancy name for an early aluminum (aluminium for you Brits!) alloy that was chosen for certain unique advantages that made it suitable for machine forming and sound reproduction. While it is no longer a popular alloy it is quite similar to the modern 3000-series aluminum alloy.The diaphragm gaskets are well engineered parts that we designed and fabricate. During reassembly of the reproducer we apply a very thin film of synthetic grease to all threaded parts and reproducer flange surfaces. This helps ensure an airtight fit of all parts and it also facilitates future disassembly if it should become necessary.
The parts we are selling are top quality. We rely on technical information that we have actually studied in patents as well as original Victor, Bell, RCA and Western Electric engineering texts. Once you understand a design from an engineering perspective you can use your head and hands together to properly restore anything based on the way it is supposed to function. This is the key to accurate work and the elimination of careless mistakes that are too often inflicted by weekend warriors.
