What a lovely antique cup and saucer made by William Adams and Sons of Staffordshire England! I have to start off with, this is a very large cup and saucer. I imagine it being used to have a meal of soup or stew, rather than a cup of tea, it is so big. The cup is 4 & 5/8 inches in diameter, stands 3 & 3/4 inches tall and holds 2 cups, and the saucer is 7 & 7/8 in inches in diameter. The set weighs in at 1 pound 13 ounces.

The pattern is called Roselle, and it is a red transferware showing an English cottage and countryside scenery, including clouds in the sky, trees and bushes, and in the distance a church and a village. The scrollwork border is about an inch wide on the inside of the cup and that pattern is repeated on the handle. It appears to me that the transferware is under the glaze, which is why it is so sharp and not faded with time! It is a snapshot in time of what things looked like several generations ago.

The backstamp was used between 1893 and 1917 according to thepotteries.org. The set is in excellent 107 to 130 year old shape, with no chips or cracks. There is some crazing, but the glaze is still smooth to the touch, so please look at and zoom in on the picture to see it. When holding at an angle to the light, slight utensil marks in the glaze are visible.
