Rare c.1840s American Patriotic

Handsaw Medallion

American Eagle / E Pluribus Unum

This early screw-shank handsaw medallion is approx. 1" in diameter, or about the size of a U.S. quarter, and weighs 0.6 ounces.

Provenance: This piece was purchased at sale in Maryland, from the estate of Jane Balderston Dye, who was a direct descendant of Betsy Ross.

It features an early American Eagle with three arrows in his left claw, an olive branch in his right claw, and a shield with stars and stripes (somewhat worn) on his chest. Above the eagle is the motto "E Pluribus Unum," and below him there are eleven stars. There is a rope border around the perimeter.

The medallion has a beveled edge, and it has its original threaded shank and threaded nut (beveled to match), which fits snugly and screws on and off easily.

This medallion is a rare form. It is quite similar to Disston medallions from the early-to-mid 1840s, but there is no manufacturer's name to confirm that it's Disston. (So, if it is by Disston, it would be either an early design or some sort of prototype.) I have not found collection or sales records of another exactly like it, so it may be the last surviving example of this particular design.

[ CONDITION DETAILS... ]

- Beautiful antique condition, from a non-smoking environment.

- Honest wear, plus a few scratches around the edge (see photos)

- The medallion has not been cleaned. It has its (apparently) original surface patina.

- The original nut fits snugly and screws on and off effortlessly.

- There is a spot of brass disease on the back, as pictured.
