Harold Witter Bynner,also known by thepen nameEmanuel Morgan,(August 10, 1881 – June 1, 1968) was anAmericanpoet, writer and scholar, known for hislong residence inSanta Fe, New Mexico, andassociation with other literary figures there. Bynner was born inBrooklyn,New York, the son of Thomas Edgarton Bynner and the former AnnieLouise Brewer. His domineering mother separated from his alcoholic father inDecember 1888 and moved with her two sons to Connecticut. The father died in1891, and in 1892 the family moved toBrookline,Massachusetts. Bynner attended Brookline High School and was editor of its literarymagazine. He enteredHarvard Universityin 1898, where hewas the first member of his class invited to join the student literarymagazine,The Harvard Advocate,by its editorWallace Stevens. He was also published in another of Harvard'sliterary journals,The Harvard Monthly.His favorite professor wasGeorge Santayana. While a student hetook on the nickname "Hal" by which his friends would know him forthe rest of his life. He enjoyed theater, opera, and symphony performances inBoston, and he became involved in the suffrage movement. He graduated from Harvardwith honors in 1902. His first book of poems,An Ode to Harvard(laterchanged toYoung Harvard), came out in 1907.[1]In 1911 he was the HarvardPhi Beta KappaPoet. After a trip to Europe, he took aposition atMcClure's Magazineandworked there for four years. He had an opportunity to meet and socialize withmany New York writers and artists. He next turned to independent writing andlecturing, living inCornish, New Hampshire. In1916 he andArthur Davison Ficke, afriend from Harvard, were among the perpetrators of an elaborateliterary hoax. They created a purported "Spectrist"school of poets, along the lines of theImagists, but based inPittsburgh.Spectra, a slim collection, was published under thepseudonymsof Anne Knish (Ficke) and Emanuel Morgan(Bynner).MarjorieAllen Seiffert, writing as Elijah Hay, was also part of the"movement". Bynnerwas friendly withKahlil Gibranandintroduced the writer to his publisher,Alfred A. Knopf. The latter published Gibran'sThe Prophetin1923, which has had a long popularity.[4]Gibran drew a portrait of Bynner in1919. In New York, Bynner was a member ofThe Playersclub,theHarvard Club, and theMacDowell Club. InSan Francisco, he joinedtheBohemian Club.
