RARE MID-19TH C AMERICAN PRIMITIVE, ANTIQUE BLUE PAINTED, HANDLED TIN LUNCH PAIL:
$237.50

RARE MIDto LATE 19TH CENTURY AMERICAN PRIMITIVE, ANTIQUE BLUE PAINTED, SWING HANDLED TIN LUNCH PAIL, featuring PERFORATED SIDEWALL HOLES forMOISTURE ESCAPE,in DRY, MATTE, DISTRESSEDPAINTED FINISH (NO LID)[Recently discovered in southern New Hampshire, this wonderful blue painted tin handled lunch pail, was conceived between 1850 to 1875,or from just before the U.S. Civil War to slightly thereafter. It has two clusters of sidewall perforations to allow steam from prepared food to vent out on the pail's sides. The unpainted tin swing handles are slightly oxidized & have a naturally aged patina. The pail was found without its lid. There are also a few slight dents found on one of the side's lower margins & on one long sidewall of the pail. The matte blue paint is lovely & scarce. There's no excessive surface scratches or scuffs. This early lunch pail or lunch box would have possibly accompanied a worker or even perhaps a soldier, holding warm beans or possibly porridge for consumption later in the day at a break. The color of the tin may have not been purely decorative but perhaps painted in blue to match the uniform of a Union Army soldier, matching the blue wool coats they wore into battle, thus allowing it to blend inas a sort of camouflaged personal accessory.Very nice.](Circa 1850-1875)Early to mid 19th century American folk art, antique primitive, painted tin lunch Height (with handles down) 6½" Height(with handles up)x 8" Width x 5" DepthWeight: 7.7 oz.
