An incredibly rare and quite possibly unique, large, hand signed and dated photograph of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II in Coronation robes, taken in 1953. Beautifully framed and gilt and silk matted.

Research indicates that this photograph was taken by Court photographer Norman Potter and depicts the Queen on the steps of Buckingham Palace prior to entering the coach conveying her to Westminster Abbey for the Coronation ceremony. The dress is the one designed and made by Norman Hartnell for the Coronation; and the bouquet of flowers is the one seen in publicly available Norman Potter photos of Her Majesty in the coach in transit to the Abbey (qv).

I believe, but have no true provenance to demonstrate, that this photo was signed post-ceremony and presented to a Royal retainer. I have not removed the photo from the frame to check for any annotations or documents.

Image clear, depicting the Queen on the steps of Buckingham Palace with two pages holding the train of the Coronation ensemble. Queen’s Man at Arms to her right; and a footman in the doorway. The queen is wearing the Coronation necklace originally designed for Queen Victoria and made by Garrards, the Crown Jewelers. The pendant is the 22.48 carat Lahore Diamond, presented to Queen Victoria in 1851. She wears the George IV State Diadem Tiara, comprising 1,333 diamonds totaling 325.75 carats and 169 pearls, including a 4 carat Canary diamond. (Note – this is the same tiara that is depicted on all the UK postage stamps bearing her image).The Norman Hartnell dress was made from white satin with embroidered floral designs - the English Tudor Rose, the Welsh leek, the Scots thistle, the Australian wattle, the New Zealand Fern, protea for South Africa, two lotus flowers for Indian and Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and wheat, cotton and jute for Pakistan.

The signature – “Elizabeth R” is hand written, clear and with only the slightest of tone age-change; and with the date “1953”. This would have been one of the first ever signatures that would have been executed as Queen.

The image measures approximately 7 ¾ x 9 7/8 inches on a mount measuring approximately 9 7/8 x 12 3/8 inches (sight). Gilt raised surround keeping the photo away from the glass. Red moiré silk matt measuring approximately 17 ½ x 13 5/8 inches to edge of frame. Overall size of gilt wood decorated frame is approximately 19 x 15 inches. Reverse also backed with red moiré silk, pinned to frame. Wire hanger on two eyes screwed into frame. Glazed.

Apologies for the glare in the photos (not my strong suit)- but none for the BIN price. This is an exceptionally rare historical image with the late Queen’s early signature.
