$1500.00

116, 114, 114 DAYS PASSAGE! Sutton & Co\'s Dispatch Line for San Francisco, The Ever Popular A 1 First-Class Clipper Ship. David Crockett. Burgess, Master, is again loading for San Francisco, at Pier 12 East River, (Old Slip). Nesbitt & Co. printers, N.Y. Undated, circa 1860s. Extremely rare, coated card stock, this one also appears to have used metallic inks both gold and silver. Wonderful illustration of Indians fighting in the woods and the words David Crockett representative of trees in the forest. Front of card has some wear and rubbing and some light discoloring at bottom right. Upper left corner crease. Back of card in fairly good condition, not adhered to scrap book, possibly a piece of tape residue and soiling and some writing in pencil.

Clipper ship advertisement sailing cards began in the 1850s and continued through the Civil War, reflecting the enormous increase in commerce between the coasts after the discovery of gold at Sutter\'s Mill in California. During the four years following the 1848 discovery, as many as 160 ships were launched and set sail as opposed to only two ships that regularly sailed from Atlantic ports to San Francisco before then. In the one and one half years after 1848, seven hundred vessels stopped in the California harbor with estimated cargoes of 100,000 people and supplies.

Clipper ship sailing cards featured full color illustrations illustrating the names of the ships, some of which created great opportunities for designers. The imprints of the cards reveal that just three printing offices issued most of the hand-held advertisements: Nesbitt & Company and Watson & Clark of New York and John H. Bufford of Boston. The total number of examples that were issued is unknown; they are, however, rare today and sought after by collectors.
