Rare Ada Lum Cloth Dolls from the early days of her creations and production in Shanghai during the 1940s.
20\" in height, the dolls and clothes have combined machine and hand stitching. All the clothes, socks, shoes and sandals are original. Hat too? Lots of hand finishing on this pair. Most remarkable, as I\'ve never found this before, are the woven red on white Shanghai labels!
Condition is good considering their age. Some spots, discoloration from age. Some broken stands of yarn hair, broken fibers on his sandals, shredding of silk on her shoes,....all the things one would expect of cloth dolls that are 75-80 years old.
Ada Lum and her brother and his family fled Shanghai in 1949 on the last ferry to Hong Kong when the Communists took over China. She and her siblings were all born in Australia and were English citizens. Their parents had immigrated there and started the first Chinese language newspaper in Australia. Her brother Gordon was an exceptional tennis player who played in the Davis Cup and also competed at Wimbledon. He purportedly played with Pu Yi, China\'s last emperor. When the Japanese were in control of Shanghai during the Sino-Japanese war he escaped torture because the Japanese general wanted to learn to play tennis. Ada Lum was a journalist (not surprising given the family history). She sketched, designed, and began making the dolls for which she is so well known while living in Shanghai. These became extremely popular with those in diplomatic circles and many other westerners and she eventually opened a shop. Shanghai used to be known as the Paris of the East. Her Hong Kong made dolls are what one commonly sees. (She had a shop in the Peninsula Hotel!) I have never seen another example of this original Shanghai label and dolls from Ada Lum\'s earliest years as a doll maker!
These dolls are being sold in their lovely and charming as is condition.
