This is a vintage August Kraus sculpture Blacksmith with anvil and sledge hammer. It is mounted on a small square of stone that appears to be marble. There is a paper card that is pictured above in German that comes with the sculpture.August Kraus was a sculptor who was born and lived in Germany who worked there and belonged to and was president of the Berlin Academy and between 1914 and 1920,and was director of the Rausch Museum. There are a few paragraphs about August Kraus and some of his sculptures with photos in the book, The International Studio, An Illustrated Magazine of Fine and Applied Art, Volume 36, Comprising November and December 1908, and January and February 1909, Numbers 141 to 144, by the New York Offices of the John Lane Company. measurements total height is about 16\" including the beautiful marble base
the base measures about 3 1/2\" tall and 4 1/4\" x 4 1/2\"
the bronze measures about 12 1/2\" tall
there is a second signature on it \" C ,,,,,,something and 1913,,,, \" please see the photos and feel free to let me know who the second signature is.... anyway it is beautiful and quite rare and excellent condition....
The sculptor August Kraus studied with a tombstone sculptor in Baden-Baden in 1882, with Johann Rieger in Strasbourg in 1883 as well as at the local Arts and Crafts School there. From 1887 he studied at the Berlin Art Academy, between 1891 and 1898 as a student in Reinhold Begas\' master class. He took part in the work for the Emperor Wilhelm I monument just as for the Bismarck monument in front of the Reichstag. Between 1900 and 1906 he lived in Rome (Grand state prize including a five-year-scholarship for Rome), between 1911 and 1913 he was Vice-president of the Free Berlin Secession, between 1914 and 1920 he was director of the Rauch Museum. In 1933 he became President of the Berlin Academy.
