RARE! 19th CENT. COWBOY WESTERN QUIRT MADE FROM STEER HORN: CARVED LEG AND HOOF!
From the days of cattle-herding, rustling, gunslinging, stagecoaches,and covered wagons this beautiful relic of those bygone days survives. It is capped on the
\"whipcord side\" by hardened hide, sewn tight with 150-year-old plus thong and heldin place with small hand-made rivets. Exquisite workmanship!
The \"leg\" is constructed in two parts, with the hoof designed to fit the horseman\'shand--as it does, very well.The hoof\'s bottom is strengthened by pewter inlays.
The whipcord\'s interwoven strands taper beautifully and are further evidence of the quality of this quirt.
Size: length (not including whipcord) 14 1/4 inches; including whipcord, about 26 inches.
Condition: On the hoof part of the leg, there are two areas where old fissures appearto have been caused by wormage, and were perhaps subject to an effort at repair.I think there may be a residual tiny amount of glue visible--although that could be justthe edge of the fissures. I have not cleaned the surface, which would answer the question.
Other than that, the very ends of the whipcord thongs appear to have been shortened slightly.
Incidental wormage occurs elsewhere, but only attests to the age and authenticity of this remarkable piece.
