When President Lincoln planned to send supplies to Fort Sumter, he alerted the state in advance, in an attempt to avoid hostilities. South Carolina, however, feared a trick; the commander of the fort, Robert Anderson, was asked to surrender immediately. Anderson offered to surrender, but only after he had exhausted his supplies. His offer was rejected, and on April 12, the Civil War began with shots fired on the fort. Fort Sumter eventually was surrendered to South Carolina.

The Baltimore riot of 1861 (also called the \"Pratt Street Riots\" and the \"Pratt Street Massacre\") was a civil conflict on Friday, April 19, 1861, on Pratt Street, Baltimore, Maryland. It occurred between antiwar \"Copperhead\" Democrats (the largest party in Maryland) and other Confederate sympathizers on one side, and on the other, members of Massachusetts and Pennsylvania state militia regiments en route to the national capital at Washington who had been called up for federal service. The fighting began at the President Street Station, spreading throughout President Street and subsequently to Howard Street, where it ended at the Camden Street Station. The riot produced the first deaths of Union volunteers by hostile action, although caused by civilians, in the American Civil War. Civilians among the attackers also were killed. (WIKI)

Vermont newspaperman and Republican politician, Frank E. Howe, bought two Bennington, Vermont, weeklies in 1902 and merged them to form the daily Bennington Banner, of which he was publisher and editor.

Around 1960–1961, the Bennington Banner was purchased by Lawrence Miller and his brother Donald, the sons of Kelton B. Miller, a politician and newspaperman in nearby Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Kelton\'s grandson, also named Kelton Miller, served as publisher of the Banner from 1977 until 1995, at which point it was purchased by MediaNews Group.By 1860 the Weekly’s circulation had reached 200,000. Among its recurring features were the political cartoons of Thomas Nast who was recruited in 1862 and would remain with the Weekly for more than 20 years. Nast was a feared caricaturist, considered by some the father of American political cartooning. He was the originator of the use of animals to represent the political parties—the Democrat’s donkey and the Republican’s elephant—as well as the familiar character of Uncle Sam.
