How rare is this submarine telegraph cable sample segment from 1853? Can you find a picture of a matching piece anywhere on-line? I can\'t.Years before the famous Cyrus Field first Trans-Atlantic submarine cable was completed in 1858, there were much shorter runs across the English Channel and between England and Ireland. This sample is from one of the first England/Ireland cables laid by the English & Irish Magnetic Telegraph Company.Rather than repeating someone else\'s information, please Google \"Anglo-Irish Cables\" (part of the \"History of the Atlantic Cable & Undersea Communications\" website). Specifically, refer to sections 4 and 5 which describe the laying of 6-core cables (like this sample) in 1852 and 1853. The 1852 attempt was unsuccessful due to weather problems.
This sample is about 1-1/2 inches in diameter, 5/8 inches in length, and it weighs about 3 ounces. It has an outer layer of 12 protective iron cables enclosing 6 copper conductors embedded in gutta percha (a natural rubber compound) for insulation. Tightly wrapped around the cable sample is an embossed brass nameplate secured with a soldered joint and some glue. It is marked as follows:SUBMARINE TELEGRAPH25 MILES, ENGLAND & IRELAND 180 TONSR. S. NEWALL & Co. GATESHEAD ON TYNEPATENTEES & MAKERS 1853This piece is in excellent condition, with some very slight corrosion on the exposed ends of the iron cables, and light wear as might be expected after 170 years.Thank you for looking and good luck!
