From Wikipedia:
The11th Indiana Zouaves(officially, \"11th Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry\") was aninfantryregimentthat served in theUnion Armyduring theAmerican Civil War.3 Month

The 11th Indiana was enlisted in Indianapolis, Indiana, to serve 90 days, withLew Wallaceas its colonel andGeorge McGinnisas lieutenant colonel. The regiment was sent to western Virginia and saw only minimal action during a raid on the town of Romney. It then returned to Indianapolis to be mustered out as its enlistment had expired.

3 Year

The 11th Indiana was reorganized in Indianapolis with Wallace and McGinnis returning as colonel and lieutenant colonel. Wallace trained the 11th Indiana inZouavetactics and the regiment became known asWallace\'s Zouaves. The uniform consisted of a grey jacket with red trimming, a grey kepi with red braiding, a dark blue zouave vest, and grey pantaloons. Later they received a new uniform consisting of a black zouave jacket with skyblue trimming, a red kepi with a dark blue band, and sky blue pantaloons. The regiment was sent to Paducah, Kentucky and from there joined Ulysses S. Grant\'s expedition against Fort Henry. Before they went into action, Wallace was promoted to brigadier general and McGinnis became the regiment\'s colonel. McGinnis led the regiment at Fort Henry, Fort Donelson and Shiloh. After Shiloh, McGinnis was promoted to brigadier general andDaniel Macauleybecame regimental colonel. Macauley led the regiment during theVicksburg Campaignand the subsequentsiege of Vicksburg.

After the fall of Vicksburg, the 11th Indiana was transferred for duty in theDepartment of the Gulf. In July, 1864 the regiment was ordered to Washington, DC and joinedPhilip Sheridan\'sArmy of the Shenandoah. With Macauley in command the regiment fought at the battles of Opequon, Fisher\'s Hill and Cedar Creek. It remained on garrison duty in the Shenandoah Valley until it was mustered out on July 26, 1865.

TheZouaveswere a class oflight infantryregimentsof the French Army serving between 1830 and 1962 and linked toFrench North Africa; as well as some units of other countries modelled upon them. The zouaves were among the most decorated units of theFrench Army.

It was initially intended that the zouaves would be a regiment ofBerbervolunteers from theZwawagroup of tribes inAlgeria(\"Zwawa\" being the origin of the French termzouave) who had gained a martial reputation fighting for local rulers under theRegency of Algiers. The regiment was to consist of 1,600 Zwawa Berbers, Frenchnon-commissioned officersand French officers. 500 Zwawa were recruited in August and September 1830. However, twelve years later, this idea was dropped. More zouave regiments were raised and the men recruited to serve in them were almost exclusivelyFrenchor people of French descent born inFrench Algeria(pieds-noirs), a policy which continued until the final dissolution of these regiments after theAlgerian War.

In the 1860s, zouave units arose in many other countries. ThePapal Zouaveswere organized byLouis Juchault de Lamoricière, a former commander of North African zouaves, while a former zouave sergeant,François Rochebrune, organized the PolishZouaves of Deathwho fought against Russia in theJanuary Uprisingof 1863–1864. In the 1870s, former Papal Zouaves formed the cadre for a short-lived Spanish zouave unit. The \"zouave\" title was also used byBrazilianunits of black volunteers in theParaguayan War,[1]possibly due to a perceived link with Africa.

In the United States, zouaves were brought to public attention byElmer E. Ellsworth, who created and ran a drill company called the \"Zouave Cadets\". The drill company toured nationally. Zouave units were then raised on both sides of theAmerican Civil Warof 1861–1865; including a regiment under Ellsworth\'s command, the11th New York Infantry—the New York \"Fire Zouaves\".
