Based on the very rare book on the adventures of Arthur H Batteridge \'Combat in and Over Delville Wood.\'Are these two personally drawn art prints by Sergeant A Sharrocks a ground observer for No 3 Squadron RAF, depicting Arthur Betteridge flying his Sopwith Camel and leading an attack on German Observation balloons in 1918. The other depicts a fight between Betteridge and German Fokker in 1918.
I became friends with Arthur Betteridge in 1981 when I advertised in South African Newspapers for veterans who had fought at the Battle of Arras 1917. Not only did Arthur write and telephone me. He flew to the UK from SA to enable me to record him and he stayed at my house In Hertfordshire. I have enclosed a photo I took of him. He sent me from South Africa, these two prints in his possession which were personally drawn for him in 1919 by fellow South African Sergeant, Alf Sharrocks.
Arthur served with the South African Scottish and was wounded at Delville Wood, went over the top at Arras and then joined the RFC (No 3 Squadron) and became an ace in 1918 by shooting down 15 enemy aircraft. He had the distinction of being the only South African to fight in and over Delville Wood. As far as I know these prints are probably the only ones in existence, certainly in the UK.These frame prints each measure 13\" x 10\" have been hanging on my office wall since 1985.Thanks for reading my listing and your interest in the Great War.£65.00 ONO for the pair including postage.
