One ofthe true pioneers of aviation he taught himself to fly in 1910 and subsequentlyset a number of records. After setting up his own Flying School he begandesigning aircraft and formed the Sopwith Aviation Company, producing more than18,000 WWI aircraft including the Sopwith Camel, which he designed. After WWIhe was bankrupted by the newly introduced anti-profiteering taxes he formedanother company Hawker Aircraft which was responsible for some of the mostfamous aircraft in British aviation history including the Hawker Hurricane andTyphoon.
