Bayonet is in excellent condition. Portepee webbing is very fragile and is broken is places. Bayonet blade is engraved on both sizes and back of blade. The brass has a rich patina. Leather on frog and scabbardare in good repair.
This is a older Prussian (German) Model 1871 "Walking Out" (or Dress Parade) bayonet. It is lighter and more elegant that the heavier M1871 that was meant to attach to a rifle. This model was made in an assortment of engraved and acid etched blades per customer preference, made to be worn to formal affairs, parades, funerals. These date to the early 1870s and were worn by veterans into the early 1900s. Acid etched engraving. Also, the 'Troddel" (name for the wool/cotton knot attached to the leather scabbard frog) Is RED/WHITE/RED = noting the 1st Battalion/2nd Company, though since the guard of this bayonet is not marked with the regiment that is all that can be described (see picture of all the various battalion/company knots that were made, see this one top/left. .Please see detailed photos for the best description of this item and feel free to ask any questions you may have!
