Weight: 1761 grams [1.76 kg]:

Anincomplete and abraded pole-axe[1*]of probable Palaeolithic date. In plan the axe is broadly ovoidand triangularonplan. In cross-section the axe has a clear humped shape. The axeheadis bi-facially worked although some of the flakes on both the dorsaland ventral faces are invasive with hinge fractures suggesting theyare a result of uncontrolled \'naturalflaking\'through movement in the soil andor frost damage. The dorsal (upper) face of the axe has been worked in many differingdirections and controlled flake scars can be seen inseveral places, there is visible cortex. The ventral (reverse) face has notbeen worked to a finish and shows abraded‘blade-flake’scars; it is possible that these have been water washed resulting inthe creation of a smooth surface, there is evidence of cortex frostpitting and thermal scars.Evidence of multi-face working can be seen around the edges of thisface. The one edge of the axe has a slight ‘S’shaped undulating profile characteristic of axes of this type.

[1*]- This is a large incomplete example and it is suggested that thisaxe would have been securely wood-hafted upon a large handled pole:

Provenance:

I recovered the axe-head where it had been deposited in a fen-drain ditch spoil-heap where, dredging hadoccurredover the winter of 2022: Northern Cambridgeshire upper Fen Edge:
