I received many items from the Welch family estate in Raleigh North Carolina. The family have descendants of Owosso Michigan and its founders the Williams Brothers. I will have several items of ( Alfred Leonzo A.L. & Benjamin Oliver B.O. ) their provenance going back to the mid 1800s. The family was also related to E.O. Edmund Otis Dewey, the brother of Thomas Dewey, who almost defeated President Harry Truman in the election after World War II.

This postcard measures approximately 11” x 3 3/8”. On the top left it states Provincetown from the harbor… And on the right it states handcolored. Please note: the postcard has been folded previously, see all pictures… The postcard is 100% intact, with the creases in the center.

On the reversed image it states made in Austria for JL Rosenthal Provincetown, Massachusetts. It has a cancel dated October 2, 1906 from Provincetown and also a canceled postmark from San Francisco California October 8, 1901 with a wavy cancel. The stamp is a five cent Abraham Lincoln stamp. It is addressed to Mr. HA Orr on the USS Barry in Hong Kong China. Henry Orr graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1905, with famous WWII navy Commander-In-Chief Chester Nimitz.

FOR REFERENCE, SEE THE PICTURE OF THE GENTLEMAN AT A CLASS REUNION IN THE 1960S I FOUND ONLINE.

The postcard reads: October 1, 1906 (from) MW Smith. Mr. Orr it was very kind of you to remember me after such a short acquaintance. I have been in P-town all summer and came down Friday for a week now this noon I met a Mr. Garison, who used to be on the Illinois I believe I was very much disappointed when I heard you had been in Boston and did not see you and if you are ever near there again, I should be delighted to have you call. Shoe ships have been here, but it has been a very pleasant summer. Mother wishes to be remember and I should be pleased to hear from you anytime. Sincerely MW Smith … I could not find out if Henry came back and married Miss Smith, but I’d like to think so!

.

The USS Barry sailed from 1902 to 1920, finishing its military service in World War I. This postcard would’ve been delivered to the USS Barry days after fulfilling a mission from President Teddy Roosevelt to “show the flag” to China. This was part of his “carry a big stick” policy.
