I'm pleased to offer this specimen of Galena with Pyrrhotite and Sphalerite from the Silver Strike mine, Murray, Shoshone County, Idaho. The specimen measures 4.36 x 3.21 x .82 inches or 11.07 x 8.15 x 2.07cm and is sawn on both sides and polished on the display face.
This piece shows coarse galena with dark magnetic pyrrhotite and dark brown sphalerite. I really like the lenses of material within the specimen and I will include a magnet that will be attached to the specimen. There is also very minor quartz in association.
The Silver Strike mine was worked for lead, silver and zinc and saw production mostly in the 1920s and was briefly reopened in the early 1970s. The ore consisted largely of galena, pyrite and sphalerite that was mined from veins from several inches wide to about 1 foot in width; in places, the vein showed solid galena from 4-8 inches in width. This is an attractive specimen that sits upright perfectly on its own and is from a locality no doubt lacking in nearly all collections.
