Platt D. Babbitt was a pioneering photographer renowned for his iconic images of Niagara Falls during the mid-19th century. His work is highly collected and prized for several reasons
Platt D. Babbitt, a shrewd early American photographer, capitalized on establishing a spot within Niagara Falls. Known for his competitive nature, Babbitt would surreptitiously photograph tourists and then attempt to sell them the images before they departed. He fiercely protected his prime location facing Horseshoe Falls, even sabotaging competitors' shots with large umbrellas.
Babbitt's aggressive tactics foreshadowed modern-day photobombing and reflect his savvy business acumen in the early days of photography.
Condition: The ambrotype itself has been sealed by previous ownership. There is a crackling on the shellac that was sealed over the glass photograph. The glass is intact. The leather is in antique condition with areas of scuffing. The case is separated. Considered "framed" within its leather case.
