Size: 17 gramsPiemontite bearing Ignimbrite is a type of volcanic rock that has metamorphosed. Initially consisting of hardened tuff. Ignimbrites form from the deposits of pyroclastic flows, which are a hot suspension of particles and gases flowing rapidly from a volcano. Overtime, the ignimbrites became lithified or solidified. Subsequently, manganese rich hydrothermal activity in the ignimbrite field deposited the piemontite and epidote that make these stones special (Mg-metasomatose, manganese enrichment of the siliceous ignimbrite). These factors occurring in one spot is quite rare.I have personally used these stones in the development of semi-precious gem pendants which are well received, and have great qualities for cabochon jewelry such as high hardness, beautiful variations, luster and translucent and opaque qualities at the piemontite inclusions. They are \"hidden gems\" for lapidary crafters and jewelers. Crystal Data: Monoclinic. Point Group: 2=m: In prismatic, bladed or acicular crystals, to

Optical Properties: Translucent to nearly opaque. Color: Reddish brown, deep red,
purplish red to almost black; in thin section, yellow, pink, violet to deep red. Streak: Reddish.
Luster: Vitreous.
