Pay Order Signed By Officer Who Served Boston Siege, Long Island, Washington:
$350.00

5 x 6 ½ State of Connecticut WAR-DATE Pay-Table – June 19th, 1780, seeking pay FOR Ensign JACOB SCOFIELD from the treasurer for five pounds, four shillings, signed by three members of the Pay-Table Committee: FENN WADSWORTH, WILLIAM MOSELEY and SAMUEL WYLLYS.

Financing the Revolution laid a heavy burden upon each colony without a federal government that could levy taxes. Many colonies, including Connecticut, issued promissory notes such as this. To meet immediate needs, such as wages, the colonies relied upon wealthy revolutionaries, foreign loans and taxes and gifts from abroad.

The Continental Navy was the navy of the 13 Colonies during the Revolutionary War. Founded on October 13, 1775, the fleet developed into a substantial force, owing to the substantial efforts of the Navy’s patrols within the Continental Congress. The Continental Navy’s primary goals involved intercepting British shipments and disrupting British maritime commerce. While the navy’s results were nominal, it did serve to highlight examples of Continental resolve and bolster American morale. Scofield signed the Pay Order on the verso, indicating he received his pay.

SCOFIELD is believed to be Jacob Scofield Jr., who is buried in a small plot in Simsbury Cemetery at High Ridge Road and Cross Road in Stamford, CT.

WADSWORTH was the son of James Wadsworth and Abigail Lewis of Farmington, CT. Before the Revolution, he and his brother, Amos, owned a general store where they sold medicines, groceries, hardware and household necessities. He entered the army during the war and was appointed Brigadier-Major on September 28, 1776 of General James Wadsworth’s Connecticut Brigade. He died in 1785 of poor health.

Following his service on the Pay Table, MOSELEY would later serve in the Connecticut State Senate from 1822-1824.

WYLLYS (1739-1823) was an American military officer and a Connecticut politician who served as an officer in the American Revolution. In 1775, he was appointed lieutenant colonel in Colonel Joseph Spencer's 2nd Connecticut Regiment, and on July 1, he was promoted to Colonel, and commanded the regiment until January 1, 1776, when the 2nd Connecticut was reorganized as the 22nd Continental Regiment. Wyllys remained in command of the regiment, serving in the Siege of Boston until the British evacuation on March 17, and then marched with George Washington to New York. He saw action in the Battle of Long Island and served in the New York vicinity until the end of the year. From 1777-1781, Colonel Wyllys commanded the 3rd Connecticut Regiment in the Connecticut Line, serving under General Samuel Holden Parsons. His regiment served in the New York area throughout the remainder of the war. He was later appointed Major General of the Connecticut Militia.

Fold. Light toning. Fine period docketing on the verso. Two strips of archival tape on verso. Overall very fine condition and an excellent example signed by Samuel Wyllys, an important figure in the Revolutionary War.
