Brief Info:

The Fletcher FU-24 was designed for the Fletcher Corp USA by John Thorp (T-15). It made its first flight on 14/6/54. It found a major market in New Zealand.

The first 11 units were built by Fletcher in USA and shipped to NZ. Thereafter up to c/n 105, they were supplied in kit form and assembled in NZ by Cable-Price Corp at Hamilton. Cable-Price became Air Parts (NZ) in 1962 and bought the manufacturing rights 1964. Air Parts merged to form NZ Aerospace Industries (NZAI) in 1973. This was in turn reorganised in 7/82 as Pacific Aerospace Corp (PAC), all at Hamilton.

The structure is modular to facilitate repair, and so sub-assemblies have become interchanged. A few airframe kits were used for spares without ever appearing as complete aircraft. Some kits were stored for several years before being assembled.

Several were assembled or rebuilt by various engineering companies. The major ones were: JAL = James Aircraft Ltd at Hamilton, WAW = Wanganui Aerial Work at Wanganui, TEAL = Tasman Empire Airlines at Auckland.

A few prototypes were produced with turbine engines, culminating in 1979 with the Cresco with a strengthened fuselage to take a 2-ton payload. This is still in production.

The prototype of the XLS-750 flew in 2001. This is marketed as the first purpose-designed sky-diving aircraft. It uses several Cresco components round a passenger cabin, and with the same Lycoming turbine engine.
