APPEARS TO BE A REMNANT OF A GALLERY LABEL (
A highly regarded and celebrated African American artist who primarily worked and exhibited in the Southeast, Young was born in 1943 in Liberty City, Florida.
While serving time in Raiford State Penitentiary, he began to develop his artistic ability as well as immerse himself in art history books and numerous artist monographs.
After prison, he took up residence in the Overtown area of Miami, once known as “colored town”.
It is thought that he produced well over 3000 works of art in his lifetime. Primarily self-taught, his style seems to be a hybrid of outsider naive folk art that embraced figurative abstract expressionism, and highly detailed symbolism that often depicted his struggle as a black man, specifically racial-social injustice.
Truly a starving artist, Young painted on just about anything he could find (as this example was rendered on a magazine page), which was typical for him.
