This is a great opportunity to buy a piece of history that is connected to one of the most important events of the 20th century. His signature is becoming harder and harder to find, so don't miss this chance to add it to your collection.
But who was Theodore Dutch Van Kirk? He was born in Northumberland, Pennsylvania, in 1921. He joined the Army Air Force Aviation Cadet Program in 1941 and received his commission and navigator's wings in 1942. He served in the Eighth Air Force's 97th Bombardment Group in England, where he met Paul Tibbets and Tom Ferebee, who would later become his pilot and bombardier on the Enola Gay. He flew 58 missions over Europe and North Africa, including some special ones involving generals Mark Clark and Dwight Eisenhower. He returned to the U.S. in 1943 as a navigation instructor.
In late 1944, he reunited with Tibbets and Ferebee in the 509th Composite Group, the world's first atomic bombing force. He was the lead navigator for the group and planned the route for the Hiroshima mission. He used various navigational techniques and equipment to guide the Enola Gay to its target on August 6, 1945. He witnessed the explosion of the atomic bomb from his station in the cockpit. He later said that he felt no remorse or guilt for his role in the mission, but hoped that it would end the war and prevent further use of nuclear weapons.
After the war, he left the military and earned a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Bucknell University. He worked for DuPont for 35 years as a research engineer and manager. He married Mary Jane Young in 1945 and had four children with her. He died in 2014 at his home in Stone Mountain, Georgia.
