Note, please...one can determine approximate age in fine Capo di Monte porcelain by studying the molding and painting of the figures. In this matched set, which I believe is no more recent than 1875, likely earlier, you see the beautifully formed bas relief, as well as the exceptional painting in bold colors. These are not 20th C reproductions in the manner of fine Capo di Monte, they are at least mid-19th century period pieces. You see two designs, the same on both matched pieces. These are based famous Greco Roman myths/stories, one concerning Romulus and Remus, born of a wolf...with a Pan goat-footed creature tending to a hoof. The other design shows two women and two men, along with a small child, being greeted by two male figures...apparently after some distress. Both urns measure approx 10 1/2\" H x 6\" across the well modeled goat\'s heads. These are high quality high fired hard porcelain, not to be confused with more recent commercially based work from Italy, Japan and elsewhere. They might have originally had covers, but their decorative value remains. NOTE: Further indication of quality is seen in the fact that someone in the 19th C replaced a nut with a then contemporary one, and used a pressure washer which has the word France embossed on it. This is an old replacement of an older nut. Both have the traditional N and crown we recognize as Capo di Monte. The weight of each urn is approx 2 1/2 pounds. SAGANGUY LTD, ANTIQUES & ART.
