Franz Ritter von Epp(bornFranz Epp; from 1918 asRitter von Epp;b.1868-d.1947)was a German general and politician who started his military career in the Bavarian Army. Successful wartime military service earned him a knighthood in 1916. After the end of World War I and the dissolution of the 2nd German Empire, Epp was a commanding officer in theFreikorpsand theReichswehr. His unit, theFreikorps Epp, was responsible for crushing of the Bavarian Soviet Republic. He was a member of Bavarian People\'s Party, before joining the National Socialists in 1928, when he was elected as a member of the German parliament orReichstag, a position he held until the fall of of the 3rd German Empire. He was theReichskommissar, laterReichsstatthalter, for Bavaria, and Reichsleiterof the political party of Germany during WW2.

FreikorpsEppwas a military association made up of volunteers and temporary volunteers in the early Weimar Republic. Named after its leader, Colonel Franz Ritter von Epp, the commander of the Munich Life Regiment in WW1, the Freikorps was initially involved in the suppression of the Munich Soviet Republic after its formation in the spring of 1919. The Freikorps was then taken over into the Reichswehr as Brigade Epp and used in the Ruhr Uprising to fight against the Red Ruhr Army. The Freikorps was known for its ruthless actions and shooting of prisoners and civilians. Among other things, it is held responsible for the murder of Gustav Landauer and the Munich Journeyman Murder. Many members joined National Socialism, including Epp himself, his chief of staff Ernst Röhm as well as Rudolf Heß, Eduard Dietl and Hans Frank. The brothers and later National Socialist politicians Otto and Gregor Strasser are also said to have belonged to the unit. The Freikorps is considered one of the “birth cells” of theNational Socialistmovement.A special case was the Freikorps Epp, led by the Bavarian colonel and later National Socialist politician Franz Ritter von Epp. After the ban in Bavaria, he had formed the Freikorps in Ohrdruf in Thuringia back in February 1919. Same as other Freikorps associations, the Freikorps Epp was a gathering place of radical nationalists and adherents of the racial movement. Rudolf Heß (1894-1987), Ernst Röhm (1887-1934) and the brothers Gregor (1892-1934) and Otto Strasser (1897-1974) were future NS noatablesrepresented in Epp\'s units.
