You are getting an 20 month or older male ostrich (rooster) from the Zuni Ostrich Farm in Virginia. These birds are approximately 8 feet tall. They are for breeding stock or butchering. If butchered, they should yield about 90 pounds of extremely high-quality red meat, high quality leather, bones for dog treats, fat for ostrich oil, and feathers for fashion and other uses. Ostrich is extremely low-fat meat and can be eaten by people with Alpha Gal Syndrome, commonly referred to as Red Meat Allergy. Ostrich oil is used in high quality cosmetic and skin treatments. These birds are perfect for someone wanting to start a low carbon footprint farm, as ostriches put out a bout 1/3 of the greenhouse gases as domesticated cattle. Ostrich also require less water, feed, and room that domesticated cattle. You can keep a breeding trio on 1/4 acre or more without having a manure problem. Ostrich feed to body weight is close to 3 pounds to one pound of body weight, domesticated cattle has at least a 10 to 1 ratio. These birds are prefect for the aspiring farmer that is also interested in doing what he or she can to raise sustainable red meat on a small farm. We have 4 available. Delivery can be arranged at additional cost, but we prefer local pick up here on our farm.
